How it works Make a mixtape

Privacy Policy

Last updated October 4, 2026

Mixtapes by Mail (“we”, “us”) lets you make a mixtape online and mail a card to someone so they can listen. This page explains, in plain language, what information we handle. Questions? Write to hello@mixtapesbymail.com.

The short version

  • We don't run ads and we don't sell or rent your data. Ever.
  • You don't need an account. We don't ask you to log in to any music service.
  • Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
  • We only keep what we need to make your mixtape work and to mail your card.

What we collect

Mixtape content

When you make a mixtape, we store the title, the “to” and “from” names, your note, the cassette color, the songs you chose, and an optional playlist link. Anyone who has a mixtape's link can see it, so please don't put anything in it that you wouldn't want the recipient (or someone they show it to) to read. We ask search engines not to index mixtape pages.

Playlists we build for you

So your mixtape opens as a ready-made playlist, we create public playlists on our own Spotify account (and a YouTube list) using the mixtape's title and the “to” and “from” names. Anyone with a playlist link can open it, but we don't publish a directory of them. For Apple Music, the listener signs in with their own Apple ID and the playlist is saved to their library; we never see their Apple ID or password.

Your private edit link

Each mixtape has a secret edit link. We store only a scrambled (hashed) version of its key, so we can't recover it for you. Your browser remembers it on your device so you can find it again.

Orders

If you order a physical card, you give your email address, the gift message (if any), and the shipping name and address to Stripe Checkout. Stripe shares those details with us so we can print and mail the card and email you a receipt and shipping updates.

Email list

If you join the waitlist, we store your email address and where you signed up, and we use it only to tell you when cards are available.

Views

We count how many times each mixtape page is opened and when it was last opened, so senders can see their mixtape found its audience. That count is not linked to who opened it. We don't use advertising or behavior-tracking cookies, and we don't run third-party analytics.

Technical logs

Like most websites, our hosting provider and servers may briefly record technical details such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested. We use them to keep the site running, prevent abuse and fix problems.

What stays on your device

Your browser stores a few things so the site works better: a draft of the mixtape you're making, the edit links of mixtapes you've created, and, on the listening page, which music service you prefer and whether you've already saved a mixtape to Apple Music. You can clear these any time in your browser settings.

Who else is involved

  • Stripe processes payments and collects shipping details. See stripe.com/privacy.
  • Apple: when you search for songs, your search words are sent to Apple's iTunes Search service. Song artwork and 30-second previews load straight from Apple's servers when someone views a mixtape.
  • Apple Music sign-in: if you choose “Save to Apple Music”, your browser loads Apple's MusicKit and talks to Apple directly to sign you in and create the playlist.
  • Google Fonts supplies our handwriting font, so your browser contacts Google to load it.
  • Our hosting and email providers store and deliver the site and the emails we send.
  • Postal carriers receive the delivery address printed on your package.
  • Links to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music and other services take you to those companies, which have their own privacy policies.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users or our service.

How long we keep things

Mixtapes stay online until you ask us to remove them. Order records are kept as long as we need them for support, accounting and tax. Waitlist emails are kept until you ask us to remove them or we've told you about launch.

Your choices

You can ask us to see, correct or delete your information, or to take down a mixtape, by emailing hello@mixtapesbymail.com. For a mixtape, please include its link. You can unsubscribe from any email we send you.

Children

Mixtapes by Mail is meant for adults. If you're under 13, please don't use the site, and we won't knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
